Overview

The state of Maryland has 2 sets of rules related to building codes, which preside over different types of buildings: the Maryland Building Performance Standards (MBPS) (Maryland applicable building codes and standards) and the Model Performance Code (MPC) (Maryland applicable standards for construction of Industrialized/Modular buildings and State Buildings).

Prince George’s County, MD has adopted the 2018 International Building Code (IBC) and 2018 International Residential Code (IRC).

Prince George’s County, MD Muni. Code § 4-101 (adoption),  § 4-105 (amendments to the IBC), § 4-240 (amendments to the IRC for one- and two-family dwellings).

Residential Building Code

Maryland adopted a model state residential code but it is not in force unless adopted locally.See PLRB, Maryland Building Codes for more information on state level codes.

Prince George’s County adopted the 2018 IRC, statewide. Note that adoptions usually come with amendments. So, it is important to review those amendments in addition to the unamended model code.

Comments:

No county amendments to Table R301.2(1) were found in the residential code amendments.

We asked the department whether ice barriers are required according to Table R301.2(1) and received the following response (10/01/2019):

Yes, ice barriers are required on roofs in accordance with 2015 IRC 905.1.2.  Also a drip edge is required in accordance with 2015 IRC 905.2.8.5.
